Room Rates Up 25 Percent For Start Of Year
New Luxury Hotel Coming To Strip
UPDATED: 10:34 a.m. EST March 8, 2004
Room rates for Strip hotels are on the rise. The average rate for the first quarter of 2004 has been just under $200 per night, up a whopping 25 percent since last year. Yet another reason to get yourself off the Strip to the lower-priced but still nice hotels in the downtown, Boulder Highway, Henderson, Summerlin or even Lake Las Vegas areas.
Add another luxury hotel to the growing list of luxury hotels on the Strip, with the announcement of a 442-room Conrad to be built on the former site of the La Concha motel near the Riviera. The upscale link in the Hilton chain will feature 700 1,000-square-foot suites in a 42-story tower that will also include 144 luxury condominiums starting at $850,000. The $250 million project will also include a three-story retail and restaurant complex at the base, although you'll have to go elsewhere for your casino action. If all goes according to schedule, Paris and Nicky Hilton will have a new place to stay in the first quarter of 2006.
Gas prices in Vegas are officially the second-highest in the nation, behind only California. I'm a big proponent of renting a car when you visit Vegas, but the $2-and-up prices are enough to get me to think twice about it. Forecasters don't see any breaks soon for the region, and it could get even higher in the coming weeks and months. Of course, it's a comparative bargain, with Los Angeles area prices of around $2.30 per gallon, so maybe I shouldn't complain.
The sexy "Showgirls" show at the Rio will close in May and will be replaced this fall with an even sexier one with the unfortunate name of "Erocktica." In addition to the expected topless women, "Erocktica" proclaims to be the first late-night show to feature an all-live band that will play heavy metal tunes from groups like Guns 'n' Roses, Aerosmith, Kiss and more. The only thing keeping me from making too much fun of this concept is that it's from Greg Thompson and choreographer Mistinguett, the same duo who produced what I consider to be the only truly sexy topless revue in town, "Skintight" at Harrah's.
After months of legal wrangling (and innumerable complaints) those annoying (and sometimes dangerous) pedicabs have been officially barred from the Strip. The bicycle-based conveyances sprang up in earnest last year and immediately started taking over the sidewalks, much to the consternation of pedestrians and the taxi authority, which viewed the free rides as a threat to their revenue generating, car-based taxis. Even though the law has been passed, don't expect it to end there. Pedicab and bicycle supporters promise to continue the fight in court.
