Sparks Ignite Paper Bales At Recycling Plant

POSTED: 12:45 pm EDT May 9, 2006
UPDATED: 1:03 pm EDT May 9, 2006

Fire crews battled smoke and flames at a Bond Hill recycling plant for the second time in six weeks.

Investigators said they think the blaze started inside Recycling Express when a wire holding a bale of paper got caught in some machinery and sent off sparks. They also said they think a similar situation caused a fire at the plant more than a month ago.

A firefighter twisted his knee when he slipped and fell, but medical crews said he's expected to be OK.

Officials said a fire prevention team would be visiting the plant Wednesday in an effort to avoid similar fires in the future.
