7-Year-Old Rescues Baby From Bottom Of Pool

Warning To Parents: Don't Leave Children Unattended

Police called a 7-year-old girl a hero for saving her baby niece from drowning in a pool, News 5's Courtis Fuller reported.

There were no grownups around when the 13-month-old fell into an in-ground pool Thursday night in the 1800 block of Theresa Court, police said. A 4-year-old spotted her and called for help.

The 7-year-old, Courtany Walters, jumped in, pulled Jayden Bingham from the bottom of the pool, and called for help.

Jayden's mother, Amber Venters, made a panicked call to 911:

Venters: "My baby just drowned in the pool."

911 Dispatcher: "Did you get it out?"

Venters: "Yeah."

911 Dispatcher: "Is she breathing?"

Venters: "She's making noises."

911 Dispatcher: "She's breathing though, isn't she?"

Venters: "Hurry, please."

"I just panicked," Venters recalled Friday. "They handed her to me. She's just lifeless. She's just laying there."

Jayden, healthy and happy, was back at the pool with her family Friday after being treated and released from Middletown Regional Hospital.

Luckily, Courtany acted quickly.

"I saw him pointing right here and I came over there and I didn't see anything until I looked down and I saw Jayden underneath the water," Courtany said.

This story has a happy ending, but many don't because drowning is the second leading cause of injury related deaths for kids under 15, Fuller reported.

Middletown police said no charges will be filed, but Detective Janice Jones gave a stern warning to the baby's mother.

Venters left Jayden in the care of her 14-year-old sister, who was playing in the pool and didn't see Jayden fall in. The baby's grandmother was home but asleep on the couch.

"I tried to let her know you can't take your eyes off a baby one minute in a pool or in a bathtub or this could happen, and we could have a dead child," Jones said.

Venters had already gotten the message.

"I would never think something like this could happen to me. Nobody does," Venters said.

If you are a parent, learn CPR and always make sure an adult is overseeing activity in a swimming pool, Fuller reported.
