Driver Texting When He Killed Child, Police Say

18-Year-Old Allegedly Admitted He Was Speeding

An 18-year-old driver reportedly told police he was typing a text message and driving 10 mph over the speed limit when he struck and killed a 2-year-old Sunday night, News 5 reported.

Jeremy Deming also told police he didn't have his headlights on when the child was struck at 10 p.m., News 5 reported.

Deming, charged with reckless homicide, pleaded not guilty in Kenton County Court Monday morning.

"I feel very bad. I'm not doing too good," Deming told News 5 at his home. "Nobody wants to see a 2-year-old boy get hurt."

Residents along Eastern Avenue, where the speed limit is 25 mph, said they will step up efforts to get speed bumps.

The mailman called the stretch of road where Nheim Jennings was killed "a drag strip from stop sign to stop sign," News 5's Ken Stinson reported.

"Everybody goes at least 10 mph over the speed limit here," said a resident, Brandy Collins.

Stinson brought a radar gun to the spot where Nheim was killed less than 24 hours earlier to see if his death would cause drivers to slow down.

It didn't. Many were still going over 30, Stinson reported.

Even when Holmes High School down the street was letting out students, reducing the speed limit to 15, cars were whizzing by.
