UPDATED: 1:13 pm EDT April 13, 2005

A local elementary school was closed after a mercury spill during a science project, News 5 reported.

Officials said someone dropped a thermometer that was part of a project at Holmes Elementary at about 10 a.m.

Although the amount of mercury spilled was very small, the Wilmington Fire Department responded to the school. Workers scanned all students and staff to make sure no one was contaminated.

The students were taken to the Clinton County Fairgrounds where they can be picked up or they will be bussed home at the normal time.

The status of Thursday's classes is unknown at this time.
