Helicopter Leaves Tri-State Casino, Crashes In Ohio River
Two Occupants Safely Escape Downed Aircraft
JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. -- A small helicopter crashed in the Ohio River near Louisville Monday afternoon after taking off from Belterra Casino in Vevay, Ind., near Cincinnati.
Both people aboard were pulled to safety after the private, two-seat helicopter crashed near Six Mile Island near Jeffersonville, according to the Clark County Sheriff's Department.
The pilot, Randy Powell, 44, of Prospect, Ky., was taken to University of Louisville Hospital after complaining of difficulty breathing.
The passenger, Casey Dixon, 34, of Louisville, was not injured, but she was taken to the hospital as a precaution.
Sheriff's deputies could not confirm the helicopter's destination.
A fuel slick in the water near the Global Material Services plant was the only evidence of the helicopter's crash.
The water where the helicopter came down was about 12 feet deep, Sgt. Rachel Lee of the Clark County Sheriff's Department said.
Powell and Dixon were able to get out of the helicopter on their own, and they were picked up by a couple of fishermen, according to a Louisville TV station.
The helicopter was pulled from the river Tuesday morning.
Investigators have not determined what caused the crash.
