The old Shortway Bridge spanning the Licking River between Newport and Covington was imploded just after 8 a.m., WLWT Eyewitness News 5 reported.
The bridge was closed several years ago after it was deemed unsafe after more than eight decades of use. It was replaced by the neighboring Licking Valley Girl Scouts Bridge.The Licking River will be closed for about 24 hours while crews remove the debris from the old bridge.Areas around the new and old bridges will be closed and roped off, but street level viewing is available for anyone who wants to watch the implosion.Crews spent Sunday mounting the 25 pounds of explosives it will take to destroy the old bridge.The metal will be recycled by a company that is just a few hundred yards away on the Licking River, WLWT reported.Stay tuned to WLWT Eyewitness News 5 and ChannelCincinnati.com for updates and live coverage of the implosion.
