FORT THOMAS, Ky. -- Most care packages sent to troops overseas in recent weeks have included lip balm, baby wipes, toilet paper and candy.
But one local company is sending something a little bit different these days, WLWT Eyewitness News 5's Tony Gnau reported Tuesday.
Pop Marketing Group, in Fort Thomas, is trying to put smiles on the faces of American soldiers serving in and around Iraq. That's why they're sending them lick-on tattoos, Gnau reported.
"We do it mostly for Fortune 500 companies, whether it be a new brand that needs to be launched into the marketplace, or an existing brand that needs a promotion tied to it," Pop spokeswoman Jeanie Morgan said.
The most recent creation at Pop has nothing to do with snaps or crackles, but with apple and cherry pie. The tattoos of American flags taste like one or the other when you lick them, Gnau reported. Morgan said she thinks the troops will enjoy a friendly reminder of an American favorite.
"Just to bring them a little taste of what they're fighting for back home," she said.
Pop plans to send 100,000 of the tattoos to the Middle East, Gnau reported.
"The American flags were an absolute no brainer as far as getting the point across that we support the troops," Pop spokesman John Schaffstein said.
Other tattoos taste like other fruits, and there's even a chocolate tattoo.
"We just want to let them know we're thinking about them, and that we support them," Morgan said. "We hope (the tattoos) make them smile, and give them a taste of home."
Pop plans to ship the tattoos next week, and Morgan said she hopes the troops also will share some of them with Iraqi children, Gnau reported.
