Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has undergone triple bypass heart surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.

A McConnell spokesman says the 60-year-old senator was undergoing routine screening last week and some arterial blockages were found.

McConnell's wife, Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, was present with the senator Monday in recovery.

Doctors said the surgery was successful and it is anticipated that McConnell will have no problems during his recovery. There was no estimate of how many days McConnell would be in the hospital or away from his Senate duties.

McConnell is the Senate Republican whip.
