Eyewitness News 5's Elena Echarri reported that it all began Wednesday when the young girl was at a nearby babysitter's house. The two were playing with their hair, when the babysitter asked the five-year-old to run a short errand to her own house for hair gel.
Terrence Steele, an eyewitness, said," I went out check on her, saw the stranger in the house, I seen her on the floor."
Police say the stranger was Hutley, a friend of the little girl's deceased mother.
Steele, 17, took the girl and returned to the sitter's home. He said that she ran to the bathroom and started to tell them what happened.
Echarri reported that the sitter said that Hutley then called the apartment three times to ask if the child was telling lies about him. A neighbor then said that he confessed to her.
A neighbor said," He told me he had his pants down, he tried to leave, I held him till I could call for help."
The child's grandmother arrived to find that once neighbors had heard what the man had allegedly done, they stopped the alleged attacker from leaving until police could arrive
She is grateful that neighbors kept him for police and took the little girl back to safety.
Mark Hutley has been charged with rape and aggravated burglary and is being held on a $200,000 bond.
The little girl has been examined by a doctor and her family hopes to get her some therapy.
