Clemson Accepts Invite To Gator Bowl

POSTED: 6:39 pm EST December 3, 2008

(Sports Network) - Clemson accepted an invitation to the Gator Bowl on Wednesday, having parlayed a strong end of the season into a New Year's Day appearance.

The Tigers went 4-1 over the final five games of the season, ending with a 7-5 record overall after a tumultuous campaign. Former head coach Tommy Bowden resigned on October 13 after a 3-3 start, but Clemson won four of its final six games under then-interim head coach Dabo Swinney.

Swinney was named head coach on December 1, following the conclusion of the regular season.

Clemson's opponent in the Gator Bowl, which takes place on January 1 in Jacksonville, will be named at a later date.

"It has long been one of the top bowl games in college football," Swinney said. "It will be a great experience for our players, especially our seniors who have meant so much to our program."

This will be Clemson's ninth appearance in the Gator Bowl -- more than any other school -- but first since 2001. The Tigers have gone 4-4 in Gator Bowl appearances.
