Tuberville Era Ends At Auburn

POSTED: 9:08 pm EST December 3, 2008

(Sports Network) - Tommy Tuberville has resigned as head football coach at Auburn.

Tuberville guided the Tigers, who entered the season ranked 10th in the nation, to a paltry 5-7 record. It concluded with a 36-0 drubbing by top- ranked Alabama in the annual Iron Bowl on Saturday, ending any chance the Tigers had at a bowl appearance.

In 10 seasons at Auburn, Tuberville compiled an 85-40 record, including a 13-0 campaign and No. 2 national ranking in 2004.

"The last 10 years have been a great time in my life, both professionally and personally," Tuberville said in a statement. "It's been a great place to coach and live, and we've had a lot of success along the way. I'm going to remain in Auburn and help the Auburn family however I can. I'm very appreciative of the coaches, players, staff and Auburn fans over the last decade."

Tuberville had a contract to coach at Auburn through 2013, but the school announced they will buy out the remainder of the deal, from which no state or university funds will be used.

"Tommy and I have had the opportunity to discuss the direction of the program," said Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs. "Through those discussions, Tommy felt it would be in his and the program's best interest to step aside as Auburn's head football coach."
