Celebrity Chatter: Big Movie Has No Star To Promote It

Canceled Appearances Won't Help 'Glitter'

What do you do if you're trying to promote a big-budget movie and the release of its accompanying soundtrack, but your star is not available. She's in emotional ruin and very fragile and won’t be able to appear in support of the products.

Celebrity Chatter Michelle SolomonIt’s definitely the worst case scenario for the folks behind Mariah Carey’s new movie and CD "Glitter."

A 20th Century Fox spokesperson recently said that there is no Hollywood premiere date set for the movie "Glitter." Hollywood junkets and premieres get press and celebrities out to meet the stars, paparazzi take glamorous snap shots and, voila!, you have built-in press for your new movie. But there's no premiere, no star.

"We're in a holding pattern and we're trying to accommodate Mariah's needs," the spokesperson told MTV.com.

The public-relations nightmare continues as Carey's folks reschedule her "Tonight Show," which was originally set for Sept. 14. Another appearance chatting up Barbara Walters pre-taped and set to air on Sept. 12 is also being rescheduled.

So here ya have it. A movie promotional tour with no star, a CD release with no musical appearance on "The David Letterman Show" or the fall premiere of "Saturday Night Live."

The film, which was bumped from Aug. 31 in hopes that Carey would be available, will now open on Sept. 21 with or without its star making public appearances and the CD will be in stores on Sept. 11.

Frankly, the buzz on the movie "Glitter" isn’t all that great and Carey continues to be upstaged, especially on the charts, by J. Lo, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears who have stolen the spotlight away from Carey.

In the music world, much like being a professional athlete, it’s difficult to stay on top and keep going when there are younger, possibly hungrier folks out there ready to step in.

Carey, now 31, paved the way for the likes of J. Lo, and now maybe it’s time she just quietly stepped aside.

Meanwhile, from the early reviews, I don’t believe Mariah will have to worry about getting better for her appearance at this year’s Oscars.

Michael's Moondance

The uneventful MTV Music Awards have come and gone. Known for its "you never know what may happen" cable antics, this year’s show had all the excitement of a Vanilla Ice comeback.

Michael JacksonAnd speaking of comebacks, the King of Pop looked absolutely desperate (and old) when he made a cameo appearance during N 'Sync’s segment on the awards. Michael Jackson moonwalked in front of the boys as they wowed the crowd with their new song "Pop." But Jackson's robot moves and moonwalk unfortunately looked as dated as his first reconstructive surgery.

Britney Spears took the call of the wild from the folks at PETA and decided not to use live cheetahs during her segment on the MTV Awards. Instead, she carried a python around her neck while singing her song "I'm A Slave 4 U."

What did the snake have to do with the song? Beats me. Spears said later that she was scared out of her wits while the huge reptile slithered around her neck.

Hello, Gorgeous!

"Funny Girl" is being re-released in movie theaters. Great. I can go see it in the movie theater and make it 1,999 times that I’ve seen that film. Thank goodness for video.

The movie was a major influence in my life and other, more famous folks than me, have said so too.

Lisa ("Friends") Kudrow said that after seeing "Funny Girl" she knew she had to devote her life to being an actress.

Me? I have the "Funny Girl" box set, "Funny Girl" commerative CD, refrigerator magnet and even the original Playbill from the show, even though I was still in diapers when that was playing on Broadway.

I'm wondering if we'll see a revival of "Funny Girl" sans Barbra Streisand. Who would play the modern-day Fanny? Hey, how about Mariah Carey?

Celebrity Q&A

Q.: Can you tell me what is wrong with Jerry Lewis? He has gained a lot of weight and is not looking like himself. Please tell me what is wrong with him. He is one of my favorite movie stars. -- Rick, Houston, Texas.

A.: Jerry Lewis almost didn't appear on his 1999 annual muscular dystrophy telethon after suffering a bout of viral meningitis. Doctors thought the bout was brought on by a steroid and an epidural that were put in his spinal column in July of 1999 to relieve back pain. Lewis, born Joseph Levitch on March 16, 1926, in Newark, N.J., signed a 20-year contract until the year 2020 with the Orleans hotel-casino in Las Vegas last year, so he must be feeling up to the rigors of performing. A doctor I consulted with said that it's possible that his weight-gain may be attributed to long-term prescription steroid use for his back pain.
