Hurricanes Lose Lead And Game To Buckeyes; McClinton Ejected

POSTED: 10:25 pm EST December 2, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jon Diebler scored 20 points and Ohio State took advantage of the ejection of the Hurricanes' top scorer, rallying from a 14-point deficit in the second half, to beat 21st-ranked Miami-Florida, 73-68, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

The Hurricanes were ahead 19-7 midway through the first half when Jack McClinton was ejected for swinging at Ohio State guard Anthony Crater. McClinton came into Tuesday averaging 15.8 points, and he had 12 in this game before being ejected.

Evan Turner had 19 points and six rebounds for the Buckeyes (4-0), who also received 11 points from David Lighty.

Lance Hurdle scored 14 for the Hurricanes (4-2), who also got 10 points and 12 boards from Cyrus McGowan. Dwayne Collins had eight points and 11 boards in defeat.

A Collins jam extended the Hurricanes to a 38-24 lead in the first minute of the second half, but the Buckeyes put in the next 13 points. Turner and Diebler accounted for all the points during the spurt, which was capped by a Turner layup with 15 minutes left.

Miami pulled away again, by as many as eight, as Hurdle went the length of the court for a layup and was fouled to complete the three-point play for a 48-40 margin with 12:52 remaining.

Ohio State then went ahead for good with an ensuing 17-6 flurry, culminated by a Jeremie Simmons three-ball inside seven minutes left. It marked OSU's first lead of the night and the Buckeyes remained in front the rest of the way.

Brian Asbury's two free throws had Miami within 68-67 in the final minute, but Turner sank two from the charity stripe with 30.2 seconds left. Hurdle then couldn't handle a bad pass, and the Buckeyes got the ball after it went out of bounds. Turner made one foul shot with 21.2 seconds to go and Hurdle missed a desperation three-pointer.

Asbury made one foul shot for a three-point margin with 6.2 seconds left, but Simmons nailed two free throws to seal Ohio State's victory.

The Hurricanes dominated early on with McClinton nailing consecutive three- pointers for an 11-2 lead. Just before making his fourth shot from beyond the arc gave Miami a 12-point lead, McClinton had the ball on the left side of the floor and was being forced out of bounds by Crater. It was then when McClinton took a swipe at the OSU player, and apparently poked Crater in the face.

Buckeyes coach Thad Matta was furious, and after McClinton made the three- pointer for the 19-7 difference, officials called for a video review and McClinton was ejected for a flagrant dead-ball foul.

Despite losing their leading scorer, the Hurricanes kept Ohio State at bay the remainder of the half and went to the break with a 36-22 lead.
